Recent Health Advisory Updates

In response to the rising number of Streptococcus suis infections, particularly in several residential areas, the Thua Thien Hue Department of Health, in coordination with veterinary authorities, local governments, and law enforcement agencies, has activated measures to strengthen surveillance, ensure early detection, and promptly contain outbreaks.

Since the beginning of 2025, the province has recorded 31 confirmed cases, including one death, with several patients in severe condition requiring intensive care at Hue Central Hospital. In just the past two weeks, 12 new cases have been reported in multiple wards and communes, including one fatality in Thuan Hoa Ward.

Current measures include: strict control of pig slaughtering activities, especially at unlicensed facilities; environmental disinfection in high-risk areas using Cloramine B; widespread public health communication on symptoms, transmission routes, and prevention; and mandatory immediate reporting of suspected cases by healthcare facilities.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid slaughtering, trading, or consuming pork and pork products of unknown origin;
  • Thoroughly cook pork and pork products before consumption;
  • Wear gloves and protective equipment when handling pigs;
  • Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing high fever, headache, nausea, or signs of suspected meningitis after contact with pigs or pork products.

The health sector will continue to closely monitor the situation, work with relevant authorities to prevent community spread, and remain prepared to respond should the number of cases increase.
